Mahalla: The Cultural Code of Urban Planning in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan — Khusniddin Tursunkulov, CEO and Co-Founder of Bloom Arch Studio, will speak at CAEx Build & Co. 2026. His presentation will explore the topic “Mahalla: The Cultural Code of Urban Planning in Uzbekistan.”
The presentation will examine the traditional mahalla as a model of community life shaped by local climate, national culture and neighbourhood relationships. Its structure reflects principles that remain relevant to contemporary architecture: human-scale streets, accessible public spaces and environments that encourage interaction among people.
Special attention will be given to how the principles of the traditional mahalla can be adapted to the design of modern cities. The discussion will explore how contemporary urban planning solutions can be balanced with the preservation of Uzbekistan’s cultural identity.
The presentation will offer a perspective on the mahalla not only as part of the country’s historical heritage, but also as a source of ideas for creating comfortable urban environments that respond to local contexts and residents’ needs.
